Small village community in a rural area close to El Doret, Kenia/Africa

Emily Verbeke and her sister Janet Kemboi

Promoting a home- and school construction in a small community for the poorest children around El Doret, Kenya. On February 09th 2015 the project by a donation of 5.100 Euro could be finalized.

Emily Verbeke and her family live in a village near Giessen, Hesse, Germany. She grew up in El Doret, a place in the north-western part of Nairobi-Kenya. The area is local and people suffer from poor living conditions.

Although having lived now in Germany for 17 years, Emily has not forgotten where she came from. Supported by a group of Adventists in Giessen, Emily has dedicated her life to bring help to the poor children and teenagers in her Kenyan hometown.
With her sister Janet, who is permanently living in El Doret, supports and looks after the poorest and most disadvantaged children in the area.

These children grow up in very poor rural areas with hardly anything to eat, and AIDS caused many of them to lose their parents and other beloved members of their families. Nobody looks after these children, nobody cares for them.

Now some of these children are living with Emily and her sister Janet (social worker / teacher) and attend local schools. The accommodation is provisional. Older children are sent to boarding schools in the urban centers for further education.
The current number of children is 12; however, the number of needy children is much higher.
Meanwhile, local authorities are aware of Verbeke `s family project and intend to support it.

Due to the need for further expansion of the school community, more donations and support are urgently needed.

More donations are needed especially for the construction of additional residential buildings, schools and other social amenities.

Expansion of infrastructure (agricultural cultivation is fundamental for self-reliance, water supply, power supply, etc.) and the extension
of schools are necessary in the near future.

The initial phase of the Verbeke /Kemboi project, which started in 2011, shows already some visible success:

  • temporary accommodation for the children has been built
  • 12 children already attend boarding schools (primary / secondary)
  • an agricultural and livestock farming for self-sufficiency has been established (small scale)

The next goals of the project are :

  • further residential buildings for permanent accommodation are to be constructed ( approximately EUR 20.000, - )
  • expansion of agriculture e.g. grains, vegetables and fruits for self-sufficiency and sale (approximately EUR 5.000, - )
  • granting medical care for the sick ones by local surgeons and hospitals, as there is no Health insurance existing (annual total primary care is approximately EUR 5.000, - )
  • construction of a well for irrigation ( approximately EUR 5.000, - ) Donations like pumps, pipes and tractors are most welcome
  • expansion of school facilities i.e. teaching materials and buildings (approximately EUR 20.000, -)

This project is necessary, because:

  • the region is characterized by a high AIDS mortality, leaving children languishing in abject poverty
  • high poverty levels
  • Influx of refugees as a result of crashes following the political differences during 2007 general elections, which left local people landless (land is a paramount resource in Africa and is the only source of food and income to the poor)
  • Some fertile agricultural regions can only be used for farming, if the land and farm machineries, e.g. tractors, water pumps, wells etc., are available

The project donations are collected by the Seventh Day Adventist Church (Mittelrheinische Vereinigung) in Darmstadt, which
coordinates and sends the donations directly to El Doret, Kenya.

  • the activities and expense accounts are controlled in Germany.

The Dieter & Bettina Wulkow Foundation is eager to pay a special attention to this project as part of our project activities.
Hence we are seeking for more donations. The support provided to this project will be forwarded directly to the school community and will be managed by Mrs. Janet Kemboi.
The patroness of the project is Mrs. Emily Verbeke, who is also our project sponsorship.
