Sponsorship project in Philippines

Mrs. Valerie Smith-Orr

Medical Care Ward of Valerie Smith-Or, an Australian Nurse, for seriously burns injured children and physically handicapped children.

On the 5th January 2015 this project could be finalized with a donation of 5,550 Euro.

Mrs. Valerie Smith-Or, a „clinical nurse specialist in burns and plastic surgery“ is the founder and the Head of the small
medical care ward, the BUSZ Station (burns unit for Bata in Zambales) for seriously burns injured children and children with congenital malformation cheilognathoschisis,). The BUSZ Station is a located in a small village within the district of Central-Luzon
(approx. 4 hours’ drive west of Manila).

Valerie Smith-Or spent all her money and belongings to help the poorest, heavily injured and physically handicapped children living
in the region of Central-Luzon. She cares for seriously burns injured children and children with congenital malformation; those who cannot afford medical care and treatment in a hospital. Without the assistance and help of Valerie, these kids would either die or suffer from physical harm for their whole life.

Valerie is working on that project since many years together with her devoted assistant Evelyn.

Her aspiration is to install a professional medical care station including postsurgical care station for injured patients. Among them
are many children whom she currently takes to a hospital if a surgery is necessary and takes them to her BUSZ Station for
a postsurgical care as far as possible. She cares for the burns injured children by herself and for the children with congenital malformation (cheilognathoschisis). She organizes the mandatory surgery and the postsurgical care; she treats the surgical wounds,
helps the little patients by learning and practising with them how to eat and drink.

Her work is also to visit the injured people at home in some rural areas far away from the BUSZ Station, moreover she takes
them to either the next or her own medical care station in order to guarantee the desperately needed medical assistance.

Valerie is in badly needs of a lot of essential help tools for her services e.g. she is in urgent need of a new car which is a basic
prerequisite for her service to save human life.

Her old car threatens to break down at every moment. She does require the car also to take injured patients to the closest located hospital (James Gordon Hospital) in Olangapo. It is there, where Valerie und auxiliary nurses provide the first aid to whoever patient required.
As most of her patients are very poor that they cannot afford a medical treatment in hospital, Valerie takes them out of the
hospital after only one day and provides them a continuing medical care treatment free of charge in her own small facility,
the BUSZ Station.

Valerie’s medical care station does consist of a single treatment room with very poor and low-standard equipment which makes
it very difficult to provide the patients with the medical care they do need. Therefore she desperately requires new technical equipment,
new medical tools and more space. There is an urgent need for action.

Very often she has do deal with horrible injuries and she is more than eager to help wherever she can, as medical treatments in hospital,
medication, bandaging material and other medical aids are very expensive. Moreover the patients are supposed to pay in advance
the costs for their treatments and hospitalization what of course none of them are able to afford. This encourages Valerie even to do
more than to offer her services free of charge as to help is her vocation and her mission.

Toni Wulkow a skilled hospital and care assistant, visited the BUSZ Station in Zambales/Philippines for a couple of week recently, he worked there as a voluntary assistant together with Valerie and he reported to us what atrocious and miserable conditions he had
seen. But what had really fascinated him the most was the ambition and devotion of Valerie despite of these incredibly harsh
conditions and social injustices. We, the Dieter and Bettina Wulkow Foundation, could convince ourselves that this project is
worth to support and we have decided to sponsor Valerie and therefore we do need your donation.

Toni Wulkow will act as patron of this sponsorship project for our foundation. Toni Wulkow has scheduled his next visit at the BUSZ Station /Philippines in January 2015 and he again will voluntarily work there and assist Valerie and Evelyn.

Our keen objective is that Toni will hand over to Valerie a donation for her BUSZ Station.

Therefore we, the Dieter and Bettina Wulkow Foundation - apart from our own donation - are eager to ask for your donation
to help to fund this project. Our goal we intend to reach is to collect as much funds as possible for the procurement of a better car for Valerie what is of essential and urgent need to continue her work. Moreover Valerie is in desperately needs of bandaging material which we want to purchase and send over to her BUSZ Station.

As second step, we want to focus on the expansion of the medical care station, the BUSZ Station (burns unit for Bata in Zambales).

The pictures which Toni Wulkow took of the injured Childs on the occasion of his first visit on site are simply horrible and speak volumes. We want to campaign for this project and help to alleviate the misery of those burns injuries very often caused by tragic series of events (e.g. electrocution, hot water, fire, embers, etc.)

Another mission of Valerie’s life is the hard fate of handicapped children suffering from congenital malformation (cheilognathoschisis).

They do have great difficulties to eat and to drink. Valerie helps these children, organizes the surgery which she can only afford through donations. The photos of these small patients which Toni took do really get under the skin.

We want to devote fully to the sponsorship of this project. Please help us to alleviate the misery of these children suffering from congenital malformation and burns injuries.

Our foundation will help directly and your donation will directly be passed over to BUSZ Station. Toni Wulkow, will follow-up this project; he will be on site and will guarantee that this project will be realized together with your donation.
