Project 01/2018 School Library for the KOB-High School, Kakoro, Uganda

Here we introduce you into our first new sponsorship project 2018. It is a literacy project in which we cooperate as a partner of the organizations NEIA e.V. Germany and Obumu Tuyambe, Uganda by supporting the composition of a school library for the new erected KOB-High School in Kakoro-Uganda.

Recently we received an initially inconspicuous request by Michaela Schraudt who is project coordinator of the NPO NEIA e.V., Rommerskirchen. Michaela was asking us if we could think about promoting a school project of her in Uganda. By our request to give us more detailed information including about her work, concern and target of the proposal, we have not only got response to all of our questions but also we received an admirable insight of her activities and her personal operations since she is engaged in the charitable work beginning of 2008. Especially Michaela plays a big part in setting of new  schools  and  educational projects  on site in Uganda.

We would like to pass all these information to you and to describe the newest project of Michela as follows because her proposition deserves our full acceptance and support. So we will be pleased, if you, together with us may support Michaela’s new project. From our side as always we will contribute our own money for this interesting school project.

The Uganda Mission of Michaela – and how it has started at all

In October 2008 the student Michaela Schraudt who is descend from Helmstadt close to Wuerzburg, flew the first time to Uganda to become a trainee for 4 month. There she came in contact with a little infant school, the J.J. Nursery School located in a slum area of the capital Kampala. The headmistress for 60 little pupils has erected a shanty to teach there the slum children. The unsafe hut was in a very bad condition and Michaela decided to help immediately. Back in Germany she started a donation campaign which was so successful, that with the collected money a complete new school building could be constructed.

After this, Michaela still flew many times to Uganda, whereby she has lived with and under the local people lasting for month without electricity and floating water, and lived just in a clay hut. She has founded new schools in the rural areas. She has gotten support by Tadeo Papaye, a local social worker; both founded the charitable organization Obumu Tuyambe. With the help of Obume Tuyambe and by the support of the German organization NEIA e.V. Michaela initiated 5 more schools among others Nursery and Primary Schools since this time e.g.

Namirembe Nursery School, located in the rural eastern part of Uganda (2011) which could be expanded by a primary school (2012). In 2016 a new building could be purchased in Namirembe and 3 schools could be installed. More than 300 children are going to school there now.

Kaitisya Nursery & Primary School opened in (2012) is located in the rural eastern part of Uganda close to Mbale. Prior to the entire completion, 108 children could start their new classes in this school. The children do get a warm meal per day. They are being taught in English, the official language in Uganda which helps them and give them good opportunities to visit the higher grade classes of the primary school. The goal of Obumu Tuyambe, Michaela and Tadeo was to enable as many children as possible to get access to go to school and to keep the education and school fees including schools uniforms as low as possible.

In the country Uganda itself, it is mandatory to pay for school visits and for school uniforms. The rate and fees are for most of the families not affordable, therefore education for children growing up in poor families is very hardly possible.

With the work of Obumu Tuyambe, the children may get access easier to visit the nursery and primary school. Moreover the monthly costs and expenses for the school shall be covered and help that the school can be run independently and without support from foreign funds like contributions by foundations or organisations. This work is based on a sustainable concept with the goal to help them and to get the school be run by themselves.

Apart from the school buildings, Michaela and Tadeo also organize to build auxiliary buildings such as kitchen, toilets, football/soccer fields, fountains and water tanks not only for the schools but also to supply the inhabitants of the associated village with water. The school buildings do remain properties of the organization of Obumu Tayambe and will be officially registered at the Ministry for Education and Sport. More and more the erected and installed school and education buildings are approaching leading positions and first school rankings in Uganda. We do not miss to emphasize that employment is getting achieved for required auxiliary personal like teachers, cooks, guarding and help workers.

For the current and new project KOB HIGH SCHOOL which was built and installed in 2016 in the community of Kakoro (close to Kaitisya) they are in the need of a school library with an overall cost estimate of approx.. 4.000 €.

This school building comprises of 5 class rooms, an auxiliary building also having 5 rooms/offices, one hostage building with 3 rooms for boarding pupils, one kitchen including storeroom, 3 toilets, 1 waste incinerator, 1 guard house and a small shop offering school articles. The KOB HIGH SCHOOL had been successfully registered at the Ministry of Education and Sport and had then been inaugurated end of January 2017. At the beginning 100 pupils were enlisted whereby 29 of them as boarding pupils. In the first year additional 76 pupils had been registered. They were starting with 2 classes (S1 1. School class) and 1 class (S2).  In the KOB HIGH SCHOOL are working in total 22 teachers, two (2) guarding men (night/day), 3 cooks, 1 nanny and 1 director.

The KOB HIGH SCHOOL is in the need of a school library which shall be realized and financed by donations through NEIA e.V.) (e.g. library room including seats, tables, shelves) but there is no money more available for the necessary books. The purchase of books, especially school literature in Uganda is difficult and very expensive. The costs for a book is amounting to approx. 10 – 25 € and the costs for the basic equipment of school books is estimated to be approx. 4.000 €.  No matter of what funds can be collected by fundraising activities; Michaela will purchase as many books as possible.

Our foundation has come to the conclusion after thorough investigation, that this project is worth to be supported, it is a sustainable project, the project control is being done on site and we can sponsor Tuyambe and NEIA e.V. as registered NGO organization.

Last information: In spring 2018 our foundation by a donation of 2,000 € could support these projekt. The library could be finished and equipped with educational and academically books. The appropriation of the library from many students is allready supposed and they are very thankful (see also our news message, dated 05.07.2018).
