Project 02/2019: Elucidation, care, medical treatment and education of Kenyan girls and young women affected by FGM

Evelyne Brenda together with two of her fosterlings who just have completed their university degree

Our Foundation intended the promotion of the rescue centres of Ms. Evelyne Brenda, Kenya by the Hospital Waldfriede/Berlin-Germany / Desert Flower Centre.

Yet by the second time the Dieter & Bettina Wulkow Foundation has intended to support the care and medical treatment of girls and young women in Africa affected by FGM (female genital mutilation).  In a cooperation project of the Desert Flower Centre/Waldfriede, Berlin and three “rescue centres” in Kenya which are under protection of Ms. Evelyne Brenda, we will promote her charitable engagement in elucidation, medical treatment and education for the girls and young women in the centres. The Wulkow Foundation recently has contacted Mr. Bernd Quoß, Chairman of the Hospital Waldfriede and Director of the Desert Flower Centre in Berlin. He remains, that the situation of the involved girls and women mostly is critical and there is still a big need of help. For the emergency centres in Kenya the Hospital Waldfriede, Berlin - an educational hospital of the famous Charité University Clinic- provides medical treatments by sending doctors. Ms. Brenda also takes care that the feminine fosterlings can get there schoolings and off-the-jobs trainings. These services are one of our focuses in our sponsorship.

Evelyn refered to us:

“The centres (Kajiado, Bisil u. Samburu) are a safe hideaway for the girls and women, who suffered by FGM, forced marriage and homely violence. Until now more than 160 girls could escape from the cultural ritual and have been rescued in the centres. There they not only will get elucidation, care and medical treatment but also the chance and possibility of schooling and off-the-job training.  That is a great help because the girls in Kenyan communities of Maasai, Samburu, Marakwet, Kuria, Gusii and Pokt where FGM is widespread will displaced out of their schools and often forced married in an early age. Hence they have to find her rank as mother and woman in their new families. But from time to time some women actually succeed a university degree”.

Evelyn continues that women after a FGM treatment and an surgical intervention needs psychological support to grapple with the complex and social impacts, even in their own families.

If you would like to get more information about these project, under the rubric “New and finalized projects” 02/2019 we have updated a complete project description.
