For many years, chairwoman Bettina Wulkow has supported a little girl named Karen in Kenya, who was in need at the time. To this day, she has been able to support the orphaned girls upbringing in the small community of Verbeke Homes near Eldoret (see also our past sponsorship projects in 03/2015 and 03/2024) and her positive and successful schooling progress. Karen is just finishing her High School, a great success. This is so much joy that in the middle of last year, our foundation took on two more sponsorships for two goldchildren, this time in Uganda. They are Jolly, a young girl, and Johnmary, a growing boy. Under the auspices of Celebrate Hope Germany and Celebrate Hope Ministries, Uganda, we will be supporting these two childrens education and their integration into a social, familial, and christian environment over the next few years.
We are delighted that all of our sponsored children write to us regularly and share their family life, their school visits, and what they are learning there. They also write to us about their friends and their hobbies. They are all so happy that we support their education and want after finishing their regular school to go to university and study later. We also write regularly and tell them a lot about Europe and Germany. They are especially pleased with the photos we include.
All of our sponsored godchildren are now growing up in a safe environment in rural communities and, like the children from Uganda, in their poorer families. After school, they often help their parents with field work and harvesting.
We are pleased to introduce our sponsored children here:
1. Godchild Karen from nearby El Doret, Kenya (now 18 years old)
When Bettina Wulkow sponsored Karen, she was 8 years old. She grew up as an orphan in the care of the Verbeke Sisters at Verbeke Homes in El Doret, Kenya. Verbeke Homes takes in orphans and children in need, whose parents have died of AIDS, for example, and supports their education at primary and private secondary schools. Currently, five children are being sponsored by Verbeke Homes, who are now in secondary school or university. Four younger children are permanently housed with the Verbekes. The children live in the small Verbeke Home, sleep and eat there, and after school, they also help in the garden, plant plants, and care for the pets. They are practically self-sufficient in the home. Our monthly sponsorship money is used to cover school fees, school uniforms, learning materials, and meals. We regularly receive reports and photos from Emily Verbeke. We have already supported Verbeke Homes twice for the development of their small community (03/2015 and 03/2024).
My godchild, Karen, attends a boarding school and has just graduated from High School. She will soon begin studying at university.
2. Godchild Jolly from Bugere, Rakai District, Uganda, East Africa (now 11 years old)
We took over the sponsorship of the girl Jolly in mid-2024 through the patronage of Celebrate Hope Germany (CHG)/Celebrate Hope Ministries (CHM) Uganda. The CHG/CHM organizations, with which our foundation implemented a school support project at Glory Christian Primary School in Sanje – Rakai Region last year (June 2024), exclusively support children in need and their families living in extreme poverty. The families are helped through income-generating projects (e.g., grain or coffee farming). The children living in the families are integrated into godchild sponsorships arranged by CHG. Many families live in rural communities. They are supported by CHM and thanks to sustainable support through project funding and sponsorships, are able to lead independent lives free from poverty and sustainably support their families.
Jolly attends primary school, which lasts seven years in Uganda. We will support our sponsored godchild monthly for the next seven years in her education and in her social, Christian environment. Jolly is encouraged to become independent.
Jolly lives with her father, her three sisters, and her two grandparents in a small, shared house in the rural village of Bugere. In her free time, she plays netball with her friends. At school, she loves English classes. She hopes to study medicine and become a doctor.
3. Godchild Johnmary from Kakuuto, Rakai District, Uganda, East Africa (now 12 years old)
Like Jolly, Johnmary has been our sponsored boy since mid-2024, placed through CHM/CHG. He lives with his parents and four other siblings in Kakuuto, Rakai District, and attends 4th grade at primary school there. The family has a few chickens and a young bull, which Johnmary also helps look after. CHM/CHG recently enrolled the family in the coffee cultivation program and provided them with a small, simple facility with which they can collect and store rain and dewwater for field irrigation.
In his free time, Johnmary loves to play soccer. He writes to us that he loves everything at and in school.
